The 854th Soundtrack of the Week Un Amore by Giorgio Gaslini.

The main title theme is a moody and swelling piece for strings and piano with a few wind instruments in there too. It promises romance and drama.

But then we're immediately in groovesville with "Tema Di Laide", a swaying samba-ish number with the melody played on... what? Sort of zitherlike, sort of harplike. I don't know what it is. But it's great.

"Etoile du Jour" is a classical-sounding piece for orchestra that could probably be successfully snuck into a concert program.

Next is the very quiet and very full of space "Interno Mobile" which features the harpsichord.

After that comes another shake sort of number but it's a little squarer, a little more acoustic than usual. "Il Surf Dei Ragazzi" has electric guitar but acoustic piano and flute take the lead roles.

No surprise that a piece called "Valzer Lento Di Sera" is a melancholy mid-tempo waltz. It's nice, though, and refers back to the main title theme.

Eerie long tones and subtle percussion work make up the textural "Ultrasuoni" while "Annuncio" brings back the orchestra for a different take on suspense, using harpsichord very effectively.

"Metamorfosi di Un Amore" is a long (nine and a half minutes) sort of avant jazz piece with an off-kilter rhythm feel, performed by sax, piano, bass and drums. It's really good and I'm curious to know how this was used in the movie.

The same combo does "Variazioni dul Tema di Laide", with a straight midtempo walking bass jazz feel and harpsichord as well as piano.

Next the ensemble does a slightly more up tune, "Fiera", with piano and sax improvising together, often in a call and response mode.

Some of the spiky energy of bebop is brought to the group's "Invenzione Per Quartetto", another cool left of center jazz tune, and then we're wrapping up with the vocal version of the main title theme but the singing is done by none other than soundtrack god Pino Donaggio!
